PD Session Summary: Creating Educational Content Using H5P

I recently asked my institution’s IT department about incorporating H5P support into our LMS (Blackboard). One thing lead to another, and I’ve just delivered my second PD session to introduce this fantastic tool to the faculty at my university.

Presentation slides are embedded below:

While I enjoyed the experience, and feel like my efforts were appreciated by the participants, I don’t feel like I accomplished what I had set out to do with my presentation. Part of that likely has to do with the fact that I didn’t actually get through all of my slides.

I wanted to introduce the tool by showing how it could be applied to a teaching situation, I also wanted to give my audience some hands-on experience to give them a chance to create a simple learning module during the session. I feel like I got that much accomplished.

But I also hoped to also have the chance to show off some of the more powerful features of the software – stuff that really excites me about it (ie. interactive YouTube videos and Branching Scenarios), and we just didn’t get that far in the presentation.

In retrospect, I feel like I tried to do too much with a single hour. Also, I didn’t account for the need to troubleshoot other people’s account setup and login problems.

The lesson? Ask participants to set up their accounts (and provide some written guidance) before coming to the session. (… and don’t try to cover too much when introducing something completely new to your audience)
